Watercolour Painting - Sensational Swan

  • Yardley Arts, The Old School Hall The Square, Yardley Hastings Northampton, England, NN7 1EU United Kingdom (map)

During this workshop you will create an expressive painting bursting with light and radiant colour capturing a vibrant and beautiful swan painted at large scale for dramatic effect.

Students will use wet into wet and wet into dry techniques and the direct painting method limiting the amount of the layers in watercolour to keep paintings expressive and fresh looking with colours that glow from the page.

Explore a variety of lively brush marks and learn how to create soft edges. Gain a better understanding of colour mixing and of using a limited palette to avoid dull muddied colours.

Nicky’s workshop was most helpful in giving me feedback on my materials. I found the step by step approach enabled me to learn new skills and produce a painting of which I was proud. Would recommend definitely
— Simon

Nicky will demo the stages of a painting and watercolour techniques which you will then use to create your own painting in a vibrant and loose watercolour style, she will give one to one guidance and support to help your painting skills progress and loosen up your style to achieve lively lucid paintings.

You can transfer the tips, tricks and knowledge Nicky offers to many subject matters in watercolour.

Who is this workshop for?

18+ years

Mixed level - although some experience even if just a little is helpful as the tutor covers lots of technique but does not cover very basic knowledge during a general workshop so it would not be appropriate for an absolute beginner with no drawing or painting experience.

Contact tutor direct to  discuss if the level is suitable  for beginner options.

I have been attending Nicky’s watercolour classes for a number of years and can highly recommend them to anyone wishing to improve. With interesting subject matter such as flowers, birds, animals and landscapes she guides you through the processes from the initial drawing, mixing paint colours and consistency, to building up paint layers to a completed painting. I’ve learnt so much from Nicky and look forward to learning more in the future.

Nicky teaches many styles but the loose and lively watercolour style appeals the most to herself and her students. Her teaching style is enthusiastic and generous and you are sure to enjoy and develop your techniques working with her, whether you wish to build on some basic experience and refine your painting skills or liberate them and become freer and more expressive with your watercolour  painting.
