Introduction to Portrait Painting in Oils (2-day workshop)

  • Yardley Arts, The Old School Hall The Square, Yardley Hastings Northampton, England, NN7 1EU United Kingdom (map)

Have you ever wanted to paint a portrait? Are you keen to learn but don’t know where to start? Then try our Introduction to Portrait Painting in Oils two-day workshop, with artist Cordell Garfield.

Following a step-by-step process, Cordell’s workshop will provide advice and guidance on painting a portrait from a reference photograph.

Day One - Producing a monochrome underpainting (grisaille) as a base for the portrait. Attention to facial proportions and measurements, plus tone and value to create the portrait.

Day Two - Application of colour using a limited colour palette to create the portrait. Emphasis on colour mixing, plus use of warm and cool colours to create structure and fully develop the portrait.

Cordell will supply reference photographs for you to work from. However, if you would like to work from your own reference photograph, please email in advance to Cordell so that he can advise. You photograph will need to have good lighting, a good tonal range and be sight size.
