The light on the coast can be very special at times, showing off the ocean as a very sensitive creature, constantly reforming - a power without a shred of arrogance. Come and enjoy a one-day workshop painting acrylic seascapes with artist, Tony Hinchliffe.

Acrylic is a fantastic medium for depicting the sea. Tony will show you how to utilise the potential of this medium from loose watery washes to heavy palette knife work, keeping control of the fast drying time.

You will start by making small pencil sketches from reference photographs. He will explain the importance of this preliminary work and how to design a composition with a focal point so you can create a well-balanced drawing that can then be developed into a painting.

Looking at some of Tony’s current paintings, he will explain the process from start to finish, the techniques used to create big skies with clouds, painting the ocean and waves, how to create an underpainting and the advantages of working on a tinted surface. He will also share his knowledge on how to exaggerate the illusion of depth and emphasise the benefits of working loose in the initial stages slowly tightening up the detail towards the end.

He will demonstrate various brush and palette knife techniques, adjusting colours - encouraging you to experiment so you can become more confident and proficient in your painting.

Reference photographs will be provided and you will be emailed a selection before the class. However, if you have photographs of your friends and family walking the dogs, sailing and so on, then please bring them along and you can incorporate them as a focal point in your painting for that personal touch.

This workshop will form a good grounding for your next visit to the coast where you can begin your exciting journey of painting the ocean from direct observation.
